'in short to tell the rate as was told to me' - - A friend of Ms. Hopkins, living here, avery prominent & reliable man in his church, losthis wife last winter. Mrs H was with her much, dayand night, (she is truly kind-hearted & very efficient)a peculiar confidence & intimacy was thus establishedbetween them, and naturally enough, whenhe began to think of getting another companion, heinquired of them who they knew, saying that he shouldnever marry from mere convenience, but only onthe foundations of mutual regard and fitness; - ithappened that just before, Mr. Hopkins had seen Emily Colmanat Buffalo, - had spoken of my going to Chicago,visiting Westfield, & perhaps this place, with Emily;so Mrs H told him she would write to me to visither & he could get acquainted, without any suspicionon my part, for that if I 'knew anything about it I shouldbe likely to pass right on without stopping; so, it appearshe quite fixed his mind upon seeing me, waiting& waiting for my appearance; - (you know I wasexpected here long before I got here) - well - he calledin the first even of our arrival, has kept calling, Emilyand I have rode with him round the country, andnow, - though the time is so short that it seems like adream to me - we are engaged. I feel satisfied thatit is all by the direction of Providence. You know thatI should not be in haste in such a matter to anotheron sufficient grounds of confidence. I am sure you
