User-Contributed Transcription I was expected before I came. He called the first day of our arrival, spent the evening - has continued to call, Emily and I have rode with him round the country, several times, - and to come to the point, we are engaged. I am satisfied with the ways of Providence concerning it. You will I think have no fears that I should act in such a matter without good grounds of confidence. The personal acquaintance is to be sure very short, but he is an old resident, well known, - his character and standing established and from his position in society eminently before the world, as well as in his religious character and office, being an elder of the Presbyterian church and fully as highly esteemed and reliable in that point of view as Dea McDonald with you or Dea Titcomb. On the other hand I had been in Mr. Hopkins' family two years associated so closely with them that my character and qualities must be known in their various bearings - they feel that they know me; I believe they think too highly of me; I am astonished at their high estimate of me and the amount of affectionate interest the take in me. They are very kind to me. Dr. DeWitt is a native of Vermont, educated at Hanover, and studied medicine with old Dr. Twitchell of Keene: -he was for many years a practicing physician, though not recently: is connected with the railroad from Cleveland, owns stock in it to the amount of several thousands, and it is considered very good property; he has been treasurer of the company for several years at a salary of 19,000 a year is also president of the Bank here, and has a drugstore.{top}My love to Anne Page. Tell her I found a flower the other day that I have never before seen and intended to send it to her but it withered too soon. Tell Sarah Harlow that I have received a letter from Miss Bright and she writes{bottom}Will you please write to Almeda or send this & tell her I will write after g. comes[left side] twenty kisses to the dear little Percie, half given by you, & half by Samuel.
