User-Contributed Transcription Westfield Feb 8' 1832My dear MotherI have written along letter to Lucy, all about self, just ready to mail in which I have told allmy thoughts and perhaps some that I don't think, for certain. It seems unnecessary to write any more now, but I thinkthe sooner I answer yours, the sooner I may get another. It is sad to think of living the most of one's life at a distancefrom all who really care for one with disinterested affection, yet if we can write often enough to have a connected idea ofthe thoughts, feelings, occasions of sorrow or joy, and dailyoccupations of friends, the discomfort and unhappinessof separation seems half removed: and I think letters, nowought to be written easily, off hand, just as if chatting anhour or two, not as if they must be intrinsically worth sendingso far, or sending at all except just for the purpose offurnishing news from friends and communing together, notto be preserved with care to be re-read but simply presentexpression of feelings, such letters need not require much timeof pains or be looked upon as a great work 'yet truly ministeringmessengers of love and happiness, may they be to the absentones in a stranger land. A few years ago and the luxury of hearingoften from friends was attended with an expense thatwould be felt, now letters can be transmitted quickly, safely, and at a mere trifle, therefore, let us write often: if not convenientto fill a sheet, send half, though I own it is a sort ofdisappointment to me to receive a short letter.
