It is natural I think.for one who has seen much of the disappointments and emptiness oflife (as all have who have lived long) to become more and more distrustfulof the promises of the future, but there is a confidence foundedon experience of the merciful dealings of providence, the manyinstances in which we have been dealt by better than ourfears, better even than our hopes, so that if things look darkwe have only to place unfaltering faith and trust in Him'who doeth all things well.' I have never realized until lately,how long we as a family had been spared afflictions previousto dear Josephs sickness and death, - no abandoned and intemperate son and brother - for how a long time, no wide separations all new together, meeting often especially, all unitedin feelings and pursuits, so as to take pleasure in each otherssociety, about from 'the sweet sense of kindred.' Time now seemsto be bringing to us changes such as other families meet with,scattering us. - I feel bad that Isaac is located so far off andso out of the world, especially in so unhealthy a climate - his businesstoo exposing him so much.
