The small minoritywho go with him - of his church, are tryingto build a meeting house, so he gives up all salary-for the present, they have been much tried, are really worthy conscientious people with as few failings perhapsas the generality of people; I have no fears of gettingmy pay sometimes: - there are people here that have knownthem more than twenty years. Doubtless I shallexplore some new field next fall, what, and where I donot know. Last week I took a trip to Chicago, a cityin Illinois 60 miles from this of 30 thousand people where fifteen yearsago there was not a house: the man lives here who builtthe post house a Capt. in M.S. services have command at thefort there. It is a city on the edge of a large prairie, builton both sides of a river for a mile and a half, also onthe shore of the lake, very low as flat as a table; therecan be no cellars in the place for two feet below the surfaceit is all water which rests on a firm bed of clay. It ismuddy, filthy, unpleasant in appearance but fullof business, all sorts of enterprise - the greatest wheatmarket in the world. Mr. Hopkins went to attend a conventionI went with him ostensibly for the pleasure of theexcursion but I wanted to find out what prospect Imight have there to teach: one of our teachers is therein a private school, she thinks I could succeed wellto open a school there talks some of returning herselfif she does I can have her school, she makes more than I do
