User-Contributed Transcription Feb 2ndself-supporting plants ----Another week has passed,a donation visit here in the mean time has banished quietnessand order from the house, - wearied every body - I took asevere cold in the midst of it, have been most sick theretwo or three days:- their donation amounted to 160 dolls.50 in money. There have been strange doings here, wrongling,unchristian feelings - Mr H has been dismissed by the church,or rather by the session - the Presbyterian church is governedby elders who with the pastor constitute the session in thehands of whom the power chiefly meets. Mr. Hopkins' friendshave roused up, talk of keeping him building a new church.the result is uncertain Mrs. H. means at any rate to goon with her school another year: she has hired a new teacherfor the juvenile department, inexperienced but well qualified,she has been two years a pupil at S.Hadley, can teach algebrawhich I cannot. A conjecture that Mrs. H. intends to do withher services only, after my term expires: I do not wish to stayunless she should be very anxious to have me, don't think Ishall want to at any rate: taken in all respects I feel more ina state of servitude than ever before in my life, but the experience will be valuable to me; I do not regret it and I have beenable to save more than in any year before little as the pittance is.At the morrow there was due me 130, of which up to this time I havespent $58, as we 'settled' 1st Jan. I offered to let it remain if Mrs. Hwould give me a note but she was unwilling to pay interest,therefore I told her I would take the money as soon as she couldpay it. She intends to pay me 50 in a few days which I wish to send to Eliab to invest or some of the rest of you in some way so as to be gaining
