User-Contributed Transcription Racine Nov 17th '49Dear BrotherYour letter of Sept reached me somelittle time ago, and was very interesting to me, your descriptionof that mountain scenery excited my imaginationled me almost to envy your happiness in ramblingamid and around the valleys, lakes, mountains androcks - those scenes of nature in which I take much delight.I rejoice in your success and progress in your professionthe delight you take in it, it must yield more true satisfactionto the mind than measuring goods behind a counteror calculation of stocks - I believe it has an elevating,a salutary effect upon the mind, to be conversant with theground, the peaceful, the pure scenes of nature: 'the book of God,'I suppose too, the mental labour connected with yourbusiness is of a kind to discipline the intellect, withoutcorroding or narrowing the mind, but it seems to meyou will be in danger of losing sight of your socialobligations; wherever you are, you feel yourself merelya sojourner, not a fixed inhabitant - not a member ofa particular community bound with it, in characterand interests, consequently there will be less sense of personalresponsibility - the great defect in society at the West, and indeed too deficient everywhere. Is there not an evilhere? Will you not have less opportunity, if not less dispositionto make the influence of a Christian felt over the mindsof your fellow men? or is it balanced by some peculiar facilities
