User-Contributed Transcription There have been very few cases here, those few have been confined to the lower class where habits are filthy & bad, and to the intemperate, It has been very healthy all the season and the most delightful weather I ever experienced; frequent showers, pure invigorating air, cool and balmy breezes; vegetation looks finely, Racine is a lovely spot, the numerous large oak trees with their deep rich foliage the many pretty gardens luxuriant with beautiful flowers and shrubbery, the fine shades trees particularly locusts and weeping willows planted around the neat dwellings, above all the lake, in view from almost every part, the placid mirror of the calm blue skies above, with its busy craft, flying up and down at all hours, form an image of peaceful happiness beautiful indeed, but marred alas, by the strife and passion of men; peaceful as it seems. there has been a succession of exciting events here for some time past. A young lady, a stranger was landed from the boat sick she was from Cincinnati on her way home: she died and two physicians under a base pretext, procured a legal warrant, disinterred and dissected the body. Another young lady from Chicago came to the hotel took a room, soon became alarmingly ill, confessed to having taken poison; it was too late to save her, she brought her shroud ready made and fifty dolls in money; She had been betrayed and deserted by one to whom she was engaged. Mr H. attended her funeral. An honorable noble- minded man with whom I have become acquainted and like much, kindly consented to assist a poor man with a large family lately from Mass. (a singing teacher) by hiring money in his own name and securing a small place for him and was so much outraged by mean and insulting suspicions of his honesty on the part of the singing master that in his indignation he got a deed and presented him the property 2 or 300 dolls. telling him never to darken his doors again. the poor little soul meekly took the deed and walked away; both are professor of religion.
