User-Contributed Transcription to be able to devote himself to literary pursuits, toread, study and write he might in this way be ableto employ himself usefully and happily, otherwisethere must be great danger that the mind will prey upon itself, lose its healthy active tone, if not its power. How little we know, or can calculate upon the future, what trials are in store for us:- we only know that sooneror later disappointment and suffering must be ourportion for in no other way will we learn that 'this is notour rest', earth must be made a desert to us or we cease ourexpectations from it and seek for the pure fountain in which are no bitter waters. Various things during the last fewmonths have contributed to make me feel that this isa world of change:- sad indeed are Josephs altered prospects!-even here, where in my obscurity, it would seem asif I could be little affected by events transpiring aroundme, I feel the influence of the imperceptible shifting of circumstances, bringing in its train, change in my experience. Here are conflicting views, discordant feelings, thespirit of peace and concord does not reign here, not even in thechurch of God. There are troubles in relation to Mr Hopkins whichhave much excited my sympathy, and doubtless I shall shareto some extent in their effects. But I believe I am writing in a very gloomy strain. I feel rather sad tonight, am sometimeslonely, in truth I have not much companionship here, I meanin the family; I have become acquainted with many interestingpeople whose society I value, but after all it must be the home
