User-Contributed Transcription Boston Aug/ 21st 1838 Dear MotherI am going to scratch a few lines in a hurry to tell you what Almeida and I have just thought of. It is to have Mayo (Isaac is too old) come right here immediately and enter if he can the free Eng. High School; A. can afford to board him without much expense & there would be no direct expense out except his clothes; There would be just the studies and discipline of mind that he needs, he could leave at any time, and not better recommendation could be found to get him into any good pace than coming from the High School, These are the advantages, but the great thing is it would save more than half the expense, and he be more favorably placed, as to influence religious, & intellectual, than we could expect to have him any where else; The school at Andover is not less than $6,00 tuition, & board 2 or 3 dolls unless they should board in common which Caleb says is not the best thing for boys; he says the school at Andover is the best about heres and Isaac could still go, there a while, and he being older could probably more readily find employment than Mayo; I suppose you feel some objection to their being at different places, but I do not think it is much; Isaac has got to be old enough to learn to depend upon himself, and experiences is the only efficient teacher, and till he does go out into the world he never will have the mental discipline & moral courage that are gained by depending upon one's own resources. Almeda & I both think this course would be best, the School begins in a fortnight from next Mond., and he must get here for to be examined before that time, so he would need to come just as soon as it is possible for you to send him, without fixing him in the least, we can do that. Charley may find it difficult to get the money and if I had it on hand, I feel so anxious to accomplish this, that I would send some in this letter but I can't now, he can get it I know at some rate or other, and if necessary, I will send it back to him. Do not deliberate too long but just think over all the advantages, & how few objections (that I can see) even if he should fail of being admitted, & that is not likely, there would be no great harm done. he would only be here a little sooner:
