User-Contributed Transcription Boston Aug 8th 1836Dear MotherI haste to inform you that you have a little Grand daughterborn the first day of Aug. Almeda is quite comfortable& is getting along well. She was sick but a short time, the Dr. didnot assure till afterwards. She has a fine fat baby with foreheadand eyes exactly like its father. its name is Almeda & I do notknow whether anything else or not. They are much pleased about itMrs. Cook says J is 'tickled, he didn't know what to do with himself. They are going into the country to show her to his folks as soon as Ais able to journey. I had a good journey, arrive at Mr. P'sabout 4 or 5 o clock - I did not feel hungry on the way & did not take dinnerbut went out after the passengers had dined & asked for a piece of meatand bread & butter, made a good dinner, & paid - 3! I tried to makemake take 6 quarters but could not. There was a young Lady from Portlandat Mr. Pomroys teaching a private school, for young ladies recentlyestablished, she has 16 or 17 at 6,00 per quar. For all, - a capitalchance: her name is Jane Lincoln, she kept school with Ann Learnedat Portland: she expects to have a gentleman take charge of theschool and she assist in it. Mr. Pomroy set an alarm clock at 4 halfand had his boy go with my things in a handcart, and I walked downto the boat alone (it starts at 5) - I should much rather Mr P. wouldhave gone with me, but I suppose he did not like to take so longa walk so early. I found several persons from Bangor - with whom Ihad been acquainted, Mr & Mrs. McGow who were at the Springsand others, a gentleman & wife from Salem whom I told you about as was on board, when I went down, - and as being acquainted with Mrs.
