User-Contributed Transcription teaching a while now. I have had several interviews with the lady making inquiries to ascertain respecting it to know whether I should like it- the man sending word from time to time that he would come to see me about it, but prevented from press of business from coming until yesterday. I have managed the business quite secretly; Mr. & Mrs. H. knew nothing of it for some time until a note was brought me which excited their curiosity: then she expressed great unwillingness to have me leave,- though she wishes to get along with but one assistant because Mr. H. is dismissed, and receiving no salary,- the other teacher is a fine Algebra scholar, a graduate of South Hadley,- but Miss Rich is liked among the scholars and people and is competent in managing the school- she is going east with her daughter and wishes the school to go on while she is gone- therefore it is for her interest for Miss Rich to stay. About the same time Miss Bright wrote me that she had been sick, had no resource, wished I could try to find her something to do, so after much thinking and perplexity, I decided to stay, wrote Miss B. to come if she wished the situation Mrs. H. informed the other teacher that she should not want her, which raised a storm among her friends because she came with the expectation of staying longer:- this was last Sat. Mrs. H. felt bad, concluded to employ her some longer, would rather feel relieved now if I should go, but even if I had not written Miss R. I should not done take the situation, have seen the man, and think I shall be much happier
