Friend Metcalf.
You must pardon my want of promptness in answering your kind letters knowing my labors as you do you will not fail to do so. I am ony happy to hear of you & of your prosperity. I think in Turner you must have a very pleasant school & must among ladies & Philosophy enjoy yourself finely. I wish you could have remained in College all the time for I am expecting from you an oration & have no doubt I shall have my expectations answered if you can be there most of the time.
I think so far as I hear most of our College boys are getting along finely - I am sorry to hear of Clark succeeding no better. A great pity he is inconsiderate. Rice is at home now, but I should think doing but little. - Mr Snow of Waterville had, I think from what he told me a few days since, concluded to commence the study of medicine without pursuing his College studies farther - Messrs Smart & Philbrick have started or are about to start for Kentucky, and so our students get scattered -
I presume if you could come into our school room now you would not recognise more than 1/4 of of the students We have now about 160 & the most regular & quiet school I ever had - Mr Holbrook who fills your old place is a very fine young man - has taught in Washington City & is a thoro' going Whig. I judge our school for this first
