Freind Metcalf,
I take my pen to answer a "nice well filled sheet which I rec'd a short time since perhaps from you: although I do not know but you are as likely to entrust the writing of your letters to the girls as the reading of them. "About your studies!! He happened? what strange accidents will happen. I was perfectly willing those handsome dears should see the letter, but as for reading it I never intended any such a thing should happen either to Mr Tash or the gals. Put off writing because they promised to do it!! Did you think that they could write a letter? Did you think they would dare to? but I do not care much for I donot think they knew how to read more than half the letter. Martha Jane! Heavens what a name! If she prizes her ears she had better be careful how she crosses my path in any of her perigrinations over the external surface of this teraqueous globe. There, if she can translate that woe is me! She could understand the whole of my letter. "Know the curiosity of the sex." I know that they are a very curious race. All I fear is that it will increase their vanity: which is certainly unnecessary: not that I mean to say that they have more of that commodity than other ladies but all have enough.
And now I will have a kiss perhaps two or three the very next time I see them: and you may tell them of my determination. Metcalf I do not think that you can help standing in the way between some pretty little girl of those parts and myself. I know you are fairly smashed. But remember, "Labor vincit omnia:" and I shall test the truth of that moto. As for Thomas T-- he is a blundering fellow and always over taken by some accident: though you must not show him this
you the headache. Give my regards to all I shall write to Tash between "now and never" and to his sister ang yours when they write to me. If there is any one dead hung or devoured just let me know it. Dont get drowned in that boat. It was new to me that any of the Misses Tower were named Sarah. ha! ha!
And for the second time good night, From your freind
I.G. Clark
P.S. I have been in a tremendous hurry all day.
