Friend Metcalf:
I have just received your letter and take this early opportunity to answer the same, as I received one from the "rebel Wheeler" also.
I always have a strong sympathy for the downtrodden and oppressed, and you can better imagine than I can describe my heartfelt sympathy for the vanquished Faculty of the time honored Bowdoin College.
Wheeler wrote that he & Boody had to take the blunt of the battle: I presume they were able to bear it and their knees did not shake quite as bad as Belshazzars. I hope you will leave as much as a greece spot of the Faculty, for one of them owes me a little, and if you annihilate them I fear it will be a bad go for me. Do spare Prof Packard, and for the sake of an old friend, leave the radical part of Ferox, the true champion. And I would especially enjoin it upon you to do nothing to wound the feelings of that truely great, but unassuming gentleman "H H Boody Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory, Bowd College," lest he take wings and fly away, and old Bowd be reconed only among the things that "have been.' A word to the wise, is enough: so I will say no more untill I see you, and then you shall have my fatherly advice verbatim, and see my abominable abhorence to every innovation upon equal rights & equal privileges.
