Friend Metcalf,
Excuse me for trespassing on your patience as I have taken the liberty to write thus soon supposing that you would like to know something in regard to your studies, or rather mine. Although I hope that they will be the same for some time to come, I was very glad to receive your letter. I you know the pleasure of receiving a letter from a friend when you are among strangers as I am nearly. The prayer bell is now ringing & I will ask Prof. Packard as to your affairs: provided that he is at the chapel. It seems odd to study and recite and go to prayers as we do. Gone to prayers. And now having been to prayers, super & having looked round a little I resume my pen. I spoke to Prof. Upham, about Latin. He says that we shall read Livy this term and the first part of the next. And we shall also read from 40 to 50 pages in "Excerpta Latina." As to greek Prof Packard was not there but I spoke to Tutor Boady. He says that if you intend to enter the Sophomore class you may read Xen - Anal. instead of Memorabilia which we are reading and which is harder than Anal. We shall read Iliad in the summer term.
