Friend Metcalf,
Your letter of Jan. 7th was received in good season, and would have been replied to ere this had any thing happened down east here, on account of which would have filled a sheet - but one day here is so like another, and none remarkable, that there is nothing new under the sun. Nobody gets married - 'taint leap-year, and the girls wont go a courting - and the 'fellers' are all too "bashful" to go themselves, - so on the whole 'tis rather a still time.
For my part, I am progressing pretty much after the old sort - each day brings the same duties - a little flogging of dull scholars, - and considerable instruction to the bright ones. - so much reading, writing, "'rithmetic" grammar, geography &c. &c. - and "school's done!"
My school consists of about the usual number, and is 'exceedingly pleasant.' My classes in the classics are prospering finely - I think of sending several to Brunswick next fall, one or two to Yale, and some to Thomaston! for which places I think they will by that time be qualified. But my class of young ladies is doing the strongest business. They have gone clean through "the Grammar," and made considerable progress in the spelling book. If you hear of any inquiry for a female teacher in any academy up west there,
