Orleans, and, on going aboard one of U.S. Steamers laying off our island having some business with the Captain, I discovered in a corner of the Cabin a little bundle of American Tract Society's books, Tracts &c and among the rest two of those beautiful Almanacs, with the folds of the old Flag and the twelve seasons represented on the covers. You can hardly understand my happiness when the Captain cheerfully gave me one of them and some Tracts. That glorious institution the Christian Commission had supplied the ships with these excellent portions of her Cargo, and it was pleasant to think that from the same hands from which our children get their papers in Elyria there came out to me in this desert place the excellent little volume. While at N. Orleans I used some of my leisure time in writing the Churches and S. Schools (there are but few in operation now), as strange to say the most active [[preferred?]] Christians are the most evident rebels and could not abide Union rule.) The colored churches however rejoicing in greater freedom than before are enthusiastic and largely attended. The prejudices of the citizens of N.O. has obliged them to resort to the Garrets of their church buildings for Sabbath School purposes, and on a hot Sunday of Septr I climbed up [[several?]] flights of steps until I found just under the roof 40 children gathered together with shining m[[?]]ing faces, all
