Friend Metcalf.
I suppose you will not feel particularly rejoiced to learn that I have taken up my pen for the ostensible and avowed purpose of writing you a long an borous letter. Do not tremble. I recd your letter in due time. There is nothing so pleasing as to received good full letter from a friend. I do not know as my letters are so acceptable to others, but theirs are to me, and as I can get them by no other means than to write I do it. I have been walking this evening: it is very pleasant: the moon shines brightly. I must confess that I feel rather sentimental to night Metcalf. I beleive you never feel very much so: at any rate I should judge so by your last, I shall take your letter up in course and write a review of it; I am very much interested in your letters whether you are a letter writer or not. They seem full of the generosity of spirit and soul. It seems like sitting together upon the end of a sofa resting our heads upon each other's shoulder, pouring real thought and secret feelings, without fear of disclosure and in confidence, telling our stories of love and danger, and all our scrapes; that you rather let out my confessions where you let those fair ones read that letter. But I will forgive you this time. What pleasure is there in talking with some stiff old fellow on some stiff and dry subject? When you cannot pour forth your whole heart. You will find students here free and willing to converse. I can not help remarking the beauty of the evening, Metcalf, I should like to walk round the "square" to night with some "fair" red haired maiden of Foxcroft or some black haired one. All have their preferences. And I am not an exception to that rule, I think you are not. Who knows but that at this very moment while I write this line you are looking over the railing of the bridge pretending to look at the waters below? But Ah! where are your thoughts? On that fair one by your side. Metcalf I seem to see you blush. I have done the same thing, or things as bad. But Ah tis happiness, tis life. You will think I am smashed. You are mistaken. to be sure have felt a little curious time and again in my life but it soon over. I was happy behind the curtains that night. And those times are past. There are no such chances here. I have been introduced to but one young lady since I came from home, I do not wish to be to any more. They are tremendous homely in this place. But few students have any thing to do with
