Dear Bro Metcalf
What the sailors call a rough Norther is hailing about us this evening and though it was so warm yesterday, that we had an excellent swim in the Gulf of Mexico, to night we gather around a confiscated stove in the only home on this side of the lone, barren island of sand Brazos. This is the point at which our army landed about fifteen years ago for its march on Mexico, and it may be that Old Zachary warmed himself by this same stove, as it is plenty old enough to have served him with its three legs and three [[?]], its amalgamated [[pipe?]] and doorless front, with all its imperfections it serves is a good turn as the wind has been down my [[Provost?]] Marshal's tent that was pitched near by and official duty keeps me at this location. We are evacuating this place for the main land at Point Isabel and one other company besides mine remain here to see that all of Uncle Sams property is safely transferred. My boon companion and fellow Captain of Company B is a Christian man and we have been singing the favorite old songs of [[our?]] L.S. Bell. "I'm a pilgrim and I'm a stranger" - which was full of new meaning to us - "Rock of Ages" - on which we try to build our foundation - and the ever present Hymn
I enclose my address and want to hear from you
