Shelburne, June 28th 1849.
Dear Isaac,
I was very happy to receive your letter, which came five or six weeks since. Joseph had told me that you had probably left that place to join Mr. Field, as he heard he was very anxious to have you with him, and so I had nearly given up the thought of hearing from you here, as I supposed my letter would never reach you. I was very glad to receive it.
Your situation must be a very pleasant one. How much you must have enjoyed this spring in spending so much time in the open air. I have really envied you such happiness. I never enjoyed the spring so much as I did the month of May. The first fortnight, I was here, it seemed very dreary to see no buds or leaves, - nothing green, no shade even in the woods but the last of May they came forward very rapidly. And how delightful. I never enjoyed half so much before. I should have enjoyed spending a whole day in the open air. I have walked more than usual since I have been here. I "board round" & with the exception of one or two families they are all more than a mile and I have walked to Greenfield, once or twice, and taken many long walks on to the high hills in this vicinity
I enjoy life very much in Shelburne. My school is very pleasant, but very small, only fifteen, but they are all quite forward. I have some very fine scholars.
Boarding round I enjoy very well all the places are pleasant and pleasant families too. I have been here
