Friend Metcalf
It was with much pleasure that I received your kind favor of the 27 ult. I do, indeed, like very much to turn my eyes back upon last winter's residence at Orono. I find now that I enjoyed myself very much there. We are not apt, while we are in the possession of happiness, to think how we do enjoy ourselves, but after this happiness is gone, and we see ourselves entirely destitute of it, then we begin to feel its value. Though I knew at the time that I was enjoying myself highly, yet I have no idea how I should miss the pleasant times which I had there, and I longed to be back again to Brunswick. I now find myself looking back very often upon Orono, and wishing myself there. But all my wishing will do no good, and I have begun to make up my mind to rest contented where I am, till I can go where I shall enjoy myself better.
