User-Contributed Transcription independent of his chief as you may know when I have not had that important personage over my work since last April nor has he given me any orders. Should the state conclude to carry this work to the Ohio you will find plenty to do although it would be best for you to come south soon as there is a growing dislike of Northern men manifestly spreading itself - This does not include me for as I have been in the most hospitable manner admitted to their houses & before the present session of Congress they talk and speak to me without reserve. And a glorious old fellow is a Virginia farmer he has the nicest sense of honour & a feeling of delicacy to his guest which your own good sense would say came from an honest heart He has whole families of negroes & has been raised with them they nursed him when an infant played with him when a [[boy?]] & he takes care of them when old. There are some exceptions, here [[but?]] mind they are almost universally men from other states free states too. Their hospitality is unbounded every day when I am up the line some old negro will come up and give his masters compliments & invite me to his house, and some of these men had 200 acres of corn alone this year & one old fellow, Capt Carter who owns 150 negroes will never hear of my leaving without sleeping under his roof. Such things have endeared me to Virginia & her men & I only write this to show you how much more of true happiness you can enjoy by adopting a country which is not as yet entirely given up to money. I look forward with sorrow to the time when I shall leave this good old mother state for that time will come; but never can time efface from my heart the sentiments of esteem which her sons have engraven there by their hearty hospitality. God save the old Commonwealth say I & God save the Union where such states are
