Dear Metcalf,
I have before me a letter which I received from you just before I left Thomaston, but whether I then answered it I do not now remember. If I did, why when you get this you will owe me one - otherwise you will not.
Be that as it may, I shall go ahead, as I have seated myself for the purpose of scribbling you a letter. Well then, what did you mean, Sir, when in a letter to my worthy chum some weeks since, you said 'that you should like to have a letter from Case, if he could keep steady long enough to write one?' Did you mean to hint even, that I am ever, on any occasion, under any circumstances, unsteady? If so, Sir, please have the goodness to retract, or meet me as a gentleman of honor to support your base accusations, at the pistol's muzzle! These, Sir, are your only alternatives - Retract, fight, or be ported as a coward and a calumniator!! My wrath will not permit me to fill this page, so turn over -
