Brother Metcalf,
How shall I begin after just reminding you of the commencement of your letter, or rather of that beautiful exordium, in which you didn't know whether you were invited to write me or not!! I say how shall I begin to give you a thousandth part of the news you ask? - But first let me just say I wonder not at your thinking the time long since you left, Time moves slowly from many causes. Since you left, it has moved so here and still continues thus to move. One reason for this may be that dim, stern shade of Butler, which three times a week stalks triumphant through Old Bowdoin's Halls. Then only are seen "sights of woe" and heard wild shrieks of heartrending anguish. But for all this who that has ever entered these "Classic halls, can forget them till his latest hour,' - and even after that we know not but that numary may survive the shock of death and fondly
