Dearest Nettie
I most always write to you when I am here on the Sabbath Day, whether I do other times or not. Yesterday I did not happen to have any pen & ink. But, Oh how I did want a letter from you. I really expected one Saturday but it did not come.
Yesterday was Episcopalian day. The Presbyterians have preaching but half the time, and the other half an Episcopalian Clergyman from Jonesboro, Mr Brittain, holds forth. You remember perhaps the three curates in "Shirley," I think this must be one of them, though I am not quite certain. It seemed almost ridiculous to see the little pompous, rather scanty brained Irishman come in there; (no vestry or dressing room you know) and dress himself in his white robes right before the audience, and then go through with all the minutia of the service, so almost absurdly, trying to intone in the fashionable high church style. Well it was almost laughable, and quite tiresome - to me at least.
