User-Contributed Transcription of Massachusetts Engineers of my acquaintance, and too made the acquaintance of several others.  By invitation of Mr McRee Swift of the Superintending Engineer I formed one of a party of Engineers etc going out over an unfinished part of the Road for a first experimental trip with a Locomotive; the first Locomotive in Cattaraugus County.   I formed a considerable acquaintance with  Mr Swift and like him very much. There is a new Rail Road projected from Hartford Conn. to Fishkill New York, to connect there with the Newburg Branch of the N.Y. and Erie R.R. of which Mr Swift, who has a very high reputation, will probably have charge.  If so I have a promise of good situation upon it, which I think would suit me finely. Would you not rather be in New England?  They are projecting a great abundance of new Rail Roads in Western and Central New York; but I do not all all like the prospects of most of them. I do not wish to get upon another such Road as the N.H. Central even if I am idle a while. And I do dislike being idle I believe as much as anyone can. I am so anxious and uneasy, and almost low spirited. I want to know just what I have to do, and then I do so love to do it. I do want now some fixed situation, where I can be pleasantly established, and have a dear Antoinette constantly with me to make my home pleasant and happy and good.
