User-Contributed Transcription of genteel loafer and their cigars did not look like New England.Another thing a New Englander notices in this city, or indeed any of the smaller ones I have been in in New York, (Troy, Albany, Utica, Schenectady, Hudson, the great variety of languages heard in street conversation and seen upon the signs. In some streets half the signs will be something besides English, from "Deutsche's Gast Haus", to "Coiffeur de Paris," &c. &c.I made yesterday an application for a situation as Division engineer upon the Great Illinois Central Rail Road.  I shall remain here until Tuesday morning, hoping to receive an answer. If not I think I shall start that day out over the Erie R.R.I want much to hear from you, but do not know how to get letters, as I do not know, how far I shall go, or where, or when I shall get there   Next Week, may find me in Virginia, or in almost any of the Western  States. However I will write to you frequently, and let you know where I may be likely to get letters as soon as possible. In the meantime my regards the family, and much love to yourself Sincerely I.S. MetcalfPlease excuse this for it is dark
