User-Contributed Transcription the best example of the amiability of the natural heart, what must be the case with others. It is hoped that some 4 or 5 others of our class have experienced a change of heart and several others. Oh the goodness of God! That He should grant his Holy Spirit, & even convert sinners, when those who professed to be His servants were so far from him, so much stumbling-blocks in the way of those who would enter in. The Lord has granted his Spirit again even to me. Oh how far, awfully far, I was from him, even if I had ever known him. How much I needed his converting spirit! and still need it! I hardly know for how long I had not offered up one really sincere, hearty prayer to God. I do hope that God has converted me anew. Oh pray that these gracious influences may not be as the morning cloud & the early dew alone, to my soul. Joseph, will you not write me of your feelings. As brothers, as members of the same church, as both daring to trust in the same Redeemer of Sinners, we ought to be able to communicate our feelings freely to on another on every subject.
I get along pretty well in my studies. French is easy, but we study it thoroughly Trigonometry is pretty. I like it well & dont get screwed. Rhetoric we have finished studied it 'terribly.' Homer, Greek, I dont like so well comes hard to me We write themes once a fortnight, begun this term. Declaim once a term.
There is considerable doing here. I suppose two about the most elegant buildings in the state, going up this summer. They have begun upon our chapel & there are some 'acres of stones' in our yards. Chapel of solid Stone. 130 feet long 90 feet wide, with two solid towers in front 120 feet high, [[?]] [[?]] [[?]] [[?]] then taper. 3 Library rooms, 1 on end, and wings. The chapel proper runs through between them. Gothic, long, narrow, extremely high, magnificently lighted only from above. stained glass, gothic windows. Planned by the greatest architect in the U.S. Upjohn of N. York. Church by the same, it is close by us, corner of college grounds. The old one is already pulled down, stood for 40 years Bowd. first Commencement was held in it in 1806. Students glad to see it go. Their accommodations bad in it. Write soon.
