User-Contributed Transcription Sat. June 1st Eve. I have just returned from an Excursion ride. J. Chandler has a brother lives up in Shirley. He was going up & invited me to take a seat in his waggon, yesterday. I began to rain, but we did not get much wet having a large umbrella. Stopped at Monson 3 or 4 hours. Up to Shirley some 8 or 9 miles further we went. Splendid country that. noble hills & beautiful little ponds in abundance. Excellent soil, those hills & fe[[?]] rocks. good crops & good market. Moosehead you know, folks getting rich. Disappointed in Monson, hardly what it is cracked up; like up in woods better Some glorious scenery among hills. We found some new plants there up. I brought home a species or Orchis. I think Virescens, Bracteala [[?]] Bigelow as described by [[?]] not down in Mrs Lincoln The Convallaria tri[[?]] puzzle me greatly, books dont do them justice. Lots of species of that or some analogous. I believe I have found out 1 or 2 by A [[?]] & Bigelow.
You must write soon. & particularly all how you [[?]] [[a]]long, &c. &c. what you do & how you board &c &c What meeting is there, always go to Church. Tell Butters he promised to write Why don't he. &c
