User-Contributed Transcription Isaac,  Ducoigne. Oct 29. 1854Dunbarton  Nov. 8. 1854Ducoign Perry Co. ILL  Oct. 29. 1854 My Dearest Wife,  My Ettie. It is most eleven oclock this Sabbath morning. I have just got fairly seated but a little while; and about the first time since I can hardly tell. It has been a sad time here. We have had a dreadful Railway accident and loss of life here. Three men were instantly killed. It was just at dark Thursday night Oct 26th. Another Thomas Taylor Brakeman (whom I suppose you have seen at DuQuoin) died at 5 oclock yesterday evening. No others seriously hurt, Young Taylor is buried today,  and I should not be at the funeral, if it did not rain so very hard, and I were not already so used up & tired out. Mr Mitchell was in the most exposed situation of any one on the Train, and his  escape seems almost miraculous. He is  almost uninjured, only very lame & sore across the chest from the Shock. I believe I wrote you on Wednesday - but do not know whether I sent the letter or not  I was then waiting for our Train to go North to Meet Mr Mason. Our Engine was only order and delayed so long that I only got to Richmond at night instead of to Centralia. And met Mr Mason, with Messrs. Osborn & Griswold of N.Y. Directors of I.C.R.R. Co. at Richmond. As it happened I talked about all night with Mr Mason perhaps sleeping two hours. We all got on the Train at 5 Thursday morning, and I transferred our dignified passengers to Mr Watson's Train on the other side of Muddy at 11 A.M. The passage down was very slow but safe  The Engine working very badly on acc't of a misplaced valve. We however got their best Machinist from the first Division, and by 4 P.M. got our Engine into good working order again.
