User-Contributed Transcription your good letter of Feb. 27 came safely to hand last evening and a little one of Feb. 21, a day or two before; two letters for me too in one week, and much it pleased me too.I thank you heartily for endeavoring to comfort "Engineers on Central Rail Roads'. on their manifold troubles and trials of patience. The Clouds 'beautifully tinged with sunshine' are certainly encouraging.Your reading Circle must be, as I can very well perceive very interesting, and very profitable, if the Readings are well selected, which I judge from the examples you gave, they probably are. The Methodist Circuit preacher Mr. Rogers preached this forenoon, and really very well, upon "The Way, the truth & the life." Mr. Rogers' sermons are really very good, methodically & argumentatively arranged for one who preaches without notes; but are very much injured by his slow, hesitating and imperfect delivery. His sermons are intrinsically very much superior to those of the little fluent Baptist preachers here, who is so much admired by most of the people.You enquire when and where I was near being a Methodist, and what prevented.It was ten years ago. In the winter of 1841-2 I was teaching school in the little Town of Brownville Piscataquis Co. Main. It was there that, as I hope. I first submitted my heart to Christ. There was a small Congregational Church there, but the Revival I think commenced among the Methodists. There was the best feeling between the two denominations. Meetings were frequently at least Alternate, and all
