October 1st 1854Dearest EttieThis last week I did not get any letterat all from you, so I have not to reply to today.  Lettershave come so regularly lately that I was quite disappointedwhen none came yesterday.  The DuQuoin camedown (or rather up.  It comes down from Mt Hawkins in the morning; goes to the old town, and is bought back up herebefore noon) and brought me no letter.  The Mt HawkinsP.M is directed to send along every thing in Friday nightsMail on Saturday morning.  But I thought he might haveneglected it; and so sent a messenger to the Mt HawkinsP.O in the afternoon - but alas! he brought nothing.Well.  I shall probably get two this week instead.It is party a rainy day: and I have not tried to go downto church today.  It is some ways to go to church.  I couldget along very well when the weather was not too veryhot - as long as I had my horses here.  But now, when itis rather necessary for me to keep my horses off upthe line, it is rather inconvenient.  I do get G.J Smithshorse & Buggy, but it is troublesome both to them & myself.So, especially as it rains about half the time today:  I amstaid at home.  I have been reading the Independent,about all the Forenoon - of Sept 21.  I believeThe one containing the account of the Meeting ofthe American Board:  And it has really doneme a great deal of good.  It is better than anythingfor a great while past.  And after the late - inaction - of the
