User-Contributed Transcription Yesterday, Most Valuable, came best to hand a nice little letter from my Ettie of May 31, whereat was I gladdened and quickly devoured it. I very much thank you for it. It seems as if I could not wait a week for another. You will often I know, will you not?Why do you not have Sabra do the Cooking, if there is no Isabel? You tell how busy you are - Ettie I do not want you to be busy - that is not at least to be tired - do not be foolish and tire yourself out as Lucy so foolishly will. I want you Ettie to rest, and run about, and play, and enjoy yourself, and grow young & strong and healthy.I cannot afford Ettie to let you wear out - don't. If you can tell what items of acc't are lacking to your book will send them to you. I have not seen Old Man's home. How do you all like Parish side.I wish you would take it upon you to be a little soulful of Lucy - keep her from imprudence and over exertion, and try to get her health & strength established somewhat. And the same for Maria - Mallie, isn't it. Though I am very slow of acquaintance you know, I saw enough of her to like her very much. But I am afraid she has one very bad fault - you may have heard me speak of the same in somebody else - caring for other people more than for ones' self. Now isn't this a sin? To be sure Moralists etc. make out high authority for it, but I suppose it is by some perversion of scripture - a natural one, and in most cases liable to do little hurt. Mankind generally being too supremely selfish to be affected thereby. But these are exceptional cases, some individuals e.g. several of my immediate connections - there may be others in the world, though I have not met them - so constituted as to be liable to sin  grievously, from mere charity, as well as mere meekness.
