User-Contributed Transcription Isaac Columbus Bartholemew Col.Cincinnati Ohio June 19, 1852                                      Columbus, Bartholemew County                                                              Indiana, Friday June 18. 1852Dear Antoinette                      I wrote to you most a fortnight ago from this same place.Since then I have been but about fifteen miles from here, and returned last night.Soon after leaving here Monday morning June 7, I was taken sick. I finally reached a little Village, called Hartsville, in the North East Corner of the Country, about fifteen miles from here, and there I laid at a little country tavern, fairly on my face, for about ten days! It was only day before yesterday that I got fairly upon my feet. Yesterday I got a man to bring me down here in a carraige, and today I believe I am about as well as common, only not quite as stout. You may imagine that I had need of all my patience, philosophy and other gentler virtues, or graces, to get along in such condition and in such a place. In fact my endurance really astonished myself, especially considering that I suffered a good deal of pain, restlessness and sleeplessness occasioned by the sickness. My sickness was occasioned by a complaint that I knew nothing of, had never heard of, and could not at first understand, occasioned merely by too much riding horseback. I find since that it is not unusual, and is well understood by those who ride on horseback very much, and by Cavalry soldiers in army etc.
