User-Contributed Transcription Pilgrim's Progress in the Nineteenth Century I have not read, but want to. I was never so destitute of books, or of the possibility of getting books as since I have been out here. In fact I have read less since out here than I think ever before. I brought no books with me, and there are none to be got at here. If I ever got to the East again, or where there are books, I will not come back I think without a supply lain in. I do think now that I shall go east next month in May. I am by no means hurried with work now, and feel rather bad that I cannot get away, but cannot leave here very well till Col. Mason comes here which will be early in May.The Work on this Division is to be let the last of May, and there will be little to do here except what we are fast doing up until after that time. So I think O can go the. But I must remain and see Col. Mason. There is some talk of putting me in charge of a Division up in the Prairies toward the north part of the State. Champaign Co. perhaps, and I am obliged to wait & see him. I hardly wish really to make the change, although a promotion and increase of salary I suppose. I have got things so well arranged here, and every thing is so good order for a comfortable season on this work, on which moreover is greater choice for improvement as an Engineer, than upon the Prairie country at the North. This the "Land of Egypt" as the call Southern Illinois , is almost as barbarous
