Dear Brother Charles
Have you any snow away Down East? Here there have been two or three fine snow storms, but they all end with a rain storm which carries the snow off without leaving a single day of sleighing. This is unfortunate for me you see; I want to get up 10 or a dozen cords of wood, and have got it all cut and wait only the snow to haul it. This lack of snow is some thing quite unusual here. Last winter there was 21 weeks sleighing.
I wish you could see these twin babies now. You would astonished to see how they have grown since they left Milo. It was about the time they left Milo, when they were two months old they weighed exactly 9 1/2 lbs. each. A week ago today when they were just three months old they weighed each a little over 12 lbs; the youngest one an ounce or two the most nearly 12 1/2 lbs. It is now supposed that they may be named Willis Putnam, & Wilder Stevens. They laugh & crow nowadays at a great rate.
Mayo weighs about 35 lbs. He sits at the table regularly like folks, & behaves tolerably:
It is supposed that we may, Mother & I, remain here for two or three weeks longer, and then perhaps go around by the way of Brattleboro & Warwick perhaps and spend a week or two of visit before getting to Elyria. So we may not get to Elyria before towards the middle of January.
In the meantime we are anxious to hear from you. Why do you not write to us? We want to hear all how you get along, & how all the children are this winter.
Have you sold the Grey horse?
Horse flesh may fall next year
Sincerely
Isaac S. M[etcalf]
