User-Contributed Transcription I shall live at Jonesboro, which is perhaps the most pleasant place in Southern Illinois.
My greatest difficulty is like to be the lack of suitable assistants. It is hard getting good sub engineers here
I consider Kossuth the greatest man of the age, and regret my being away here almost ore than any thing else because it deprives me of the opportunity of hearing him. As for France, it seems as if the whole nation were almost below contempt for suffering themselves to be so used. However I suppose there are many circumstances which we can hardly understand, which should moderate our judgment.
What a great thing that Maine Liquor Law is I have been very proud of my state since that Law is carried out so well.
Probably other states will soon follow the example Even Illinois had taken one step. A law prohibiting all sales of liquor in less quantity than a quart, passed a year since. Some thought, one would think, understand it that they must drink a quart!
However perhaps it does some good.
Well I must stop. Kiss Charley & Josie for me &c
Please write to me often Sincerely I. S. M.
