User-Contributed Transcription Your remarks upon infinities &c. I take it are the production of your 'would be' or should be celebrated 'Machine for original Ideas." I judge the machine may be a valuable one, but it strikes me, that like Sam Hicks' machine for "Original Poetry," it needs finishing. The manufactured article seems to lack polish. However the sample you gave was perhaps hardly sufficient to form an opinion upon.
We had a few days of very warm weather about three weeks since which it has been very remarkably cold. Most kept fires some. It has also been very dry indeed. I think crops must have suffered much by the united cold & drought. Wed. & Thurs. however we had a splendid rain I expect it will be warmer after it. The hay in the College grounds was cut last week. The object of cutting so early is to have it spring again before Commencement, & then cut it again in fall.
This term is called the hardest in the four years course, Fall of Sophomore year. We study Analytic Geometry, or Application of Algebra to Geometry, by Prof Smith, called the hardest of all Mathematics. I dont think it so very, yet at least, however.
In French we are reading Moliére, Plays. & writing French In Greek, Electra, of Sophocles, an old Greek Tragedy, and esteemed very hard, though, as all use pony's as they are called, translations it is not so killing hard. By the way I think the use of translations, that is proper use, is beneficial. A. B. & C. notwithstanding
What are your circumstances in a pecuniary point of view. How would it probably comport with your convenience to send me [check mark] or X some 6 or 8 weeks hence, if I should happen to need it & send you a request therefor? before Commencement. I may need it.
Please write soon & particularly, tell Eliah to write, & Lucy I am waiting to receive a letter from her before writing. Write immediate I will try to write a better letter both for matter & penmanship again
Write your Aff Brother Isaac
