User-Contributed Transcription I suppose things are going on in about the old style at home. Walton was there and put up a Chimney Friday before I left. I dont know whether Gilman is there this week or not. Their farming is rather late for the season.
Ezra Barker was here last week is going to have his lame leg amputated, & wished to be mesmerised, but he has naturally such a constitution that Dennis could not come it over him. He has been 3 years at Philips Exeter Academy, got up to top. Took 2 or 3, hundred dollar prizes, in succession. Supported by prize money &c entirely, 3 years, without teaching or anything.
His Class, in which his bill was No 1, all entered Cambridge last fall, a year in advance. Enquire how he succeeded last winter, 8 month, with that great school of 100+ Oldtown rowdies; cripple as he is, has hardly stood up since. It is too bad for such a fellow as he is, or might be, to lose a leg, mutilate such a peice of timber.
Philips Exeter, by his report, must be a place for severe discipline, thorough scholarship, & great advantages. 3 teachers No. of students limited to 72, Charity students preferred, smart ones Richly funded. Thousand dollars dont know but more, distributed in prizes, per annum. Large libraries, every thing right.
Had not you or Eliah better try to go there. Barker says there is no difficulty in admittance in Charity, for one good scholar &c. Almost advised me to go there old & advanced as I am. By him discipline is about equal to a College course, common.
I dont know but the abstract of news which with I have filled this paper will be interesing to you or not. I will try & do better again, both matter & manner Ever I.S. Metcalf
Careful of your health & constitution. Also your mind & your heart.
