User-Contributed Transcription I seem to get along rather slowly here lately.  Mr Keyes is most sick, and every thing moves slowly.  The Weather is ~ good enough over head ~ though it threatens rain every day, it does not rain ~ but is very warm ~ but the mud is enormous.   Why I think I would be speaking within bounds to say that, throughout all Southern Illinois, on an average, the mud is less than knee deep. And that DuQuoin village is no exception I can certify, for I have waded in it deeply & extensively.  It is very muddy.   I am glad you have begun to go to the Sewing Circle. How do you like it? or rather how well did you expect to like it? I do not expect I would like it much. You say people say they would like to get acquainted with me. Perhaps they would like it better than I would.  Perhaps I will take part of that back. However I wish I were there tonight   Well, it is getting late. Praise Jennie a little for me when she is a good girl. Kiss P.W. smartly on my account: and request him to kiss his Mother for me.  Undoubtedly,  Isaac S. Metcalf
