User-Contributed Transcription Isaac Decatur  Jan 29. 1856Dunbarton  Feb 5. 1856 Decatur  Jan 29. 1856My Dearest   It is my Birthday today. Only to think of it, I am today 34, thirty four years old. It makes me feel almost an old man to think of it. How short the last twelve months seems; and in twelve more, short & fleeting as were those, I shall have reached, if I live till then, one half of Man's appointed three score years and ten. And this is far longer than I can expect my life to be prolonged. And yet I seem to myself to have but just begun to live, in fact not seen yet to be fairly started and ready to live a life which is really living. Till some three years and a half ago, "since we were Wed, Ettie", I hardly realized what it was to live.  Well, shall the latter days be better than the former? Help me, Ettie, Mine own, that, at least, I may do my part better than I have done.
