User-Contributed Transcription merely struggled for existence. It shot forward rapidly in 37 ~ 39, when Illinois tried so hard to be something ~ but after that almost went backward. Its grand strides to greatness have been within the last four or five years.  Mr Porter is a very good preacher, but he is  not accustomed to preaching in big houses, and he tried too hard to fill the house, and hurt his voice. Eve. I did intend afternoon or evening to have gone to the Plymouth Church, but they have pulled down their old Church, where I have been, and built another ever so far up town, and it has been cold and windy today that I did not like to hunt it up. So this evening I strayed into a Methodist Church evidently a big & prosperous one. The Preacher a big stout man who would evidently be lazy if he was not a Methodist. As it is, he certainly thundered away well. I do like to hear a real large hearted big headed Methodist preacher. His subject was the Pool of Bethesda, and his sermon a thoroughly Methodist one. The Blind were Sinners, the withered were Backsliders, the halt, lame, imperfect Christians, not sanctified.  "But, blessed be God, the Angel comes down now every day, and the Pool is troubled all the time."  Well he is quite a preacher; I wish I knew his name.  Whether I shall get to Milwaukee tomorrow or not I cannot yet tell. big train did to through today but I would not go   Good night & all blessings   Isaac
