User-Contributed Transcription I believe I wrote to you Sunday. Monday I spent the forenoon down in the coal mine: quite well worth visiting too. Their galleries extend more than a quarter of a mile already; chambers cut in the coal in all directions. Quite a populous place too. A hundred or two of Miners are at work there. They do not live down there yet.  But they have a half dozen mules down there who do, and who are never likely to see day light again. It seemed curious to go down in there from the cold out doors, the snow, and men wrapped up in furs, and see the Miners at work half naked; many of them nothing on but a pair of drawers or thin pants & shoes. Down in the Mine, you know, is an equable summer temperature all the time.  Afternoon I took Mr. Keyes' mare Jenny, and rode down to Old DuQuoin, called at Dr Wall's, Hiram Hinckley's & c.  And went round the old place; it looks bad enough, I assure you. It is just as it was when I was there last
