Dear Brother Charles
It seems some time, really a long time, since we have heard from you directly. I wish, we wish, you would write to us oftener than you do. It would seem to be quite a comfort just to hear from a cool place this warm weather that we have here. We are said however to be very much favored with cool weather this summer. June was very warm, thermometer about 100 in the shade regularly day after day. but nearly the whole month of July was quite cool, astonishingly so to the natives.
But now for a week or two the heat has come back in full force. Down in Maine you can hardly have an idea of the enervating effect of such weather, when the only effort that seems possible, and that a great one, is to sit in the shadiest place or coolest side of the house to be found. I tell you Maine seems almost a Paradise to one here nowadays, and one good full breath of that bracing air worth a small farm. I expect to have to come Down East to live one of these days. By the way, I should like to swap
