User-Contributed Transcription The day Thursday was a very unfavorable one for the Meeting at Newport. The Storm undoubtedly prevented the attendance of hundreds. Still there were more probably three or four hundred present, and there seemed to be a very good degree of interest. I do not know what the eventual success of the present movement may be, but it is a very hard time to raise money, especially for the Railroads, and I am a good deal afraid they will not be able to go on this Season. If they do not, I shall of course be out of business in New Hampshire, and may be obliged to go West, or at least out of New England for employment.I do hope they will be able to go on, on my own account, as well as on that of the Rail Road.I think I can do better there than almost any where else, having a great advantage on acquaintance and the good will. It seems very important too that the Road should be built through immediately.  I think I will send you a copy of our Report. You will notice my name favorably mentioned. It is all I wanted or could expect, although almost the whole Report, with the single exception of that paragraph was prepared and written by me and I made up all the Estimates etc. myself. They were all approved by Mr. Chase exactly as I formed them.Yet the Credit, as a matter of course and custom. goes to the Chief Engineer, who is responsible for the whole.  However expect to be Chief Engineer myself one of these days.
