User-Contributed Transcription Isaac Du Quoin, Perry Co. Illinois Monday Jan 26 1857My Dear Mother Your excellent letter of Jan 8th or 10th, I did not get until the 22d or 23d though it might have been here a few days before that, while I was away at Springfield, the Capital of the State. I spent about a week there watching the Legislature now in Session. Perhaps I may return before the Session closes. I want to see they do not do us any mischief by any action about cross or connecting lines of Rail Roads in this part of the State. I wrote a long letter to you since I came from Elyria; probably near the same time that you wrote to me.Your letter gratified me much; but there were two things in it that I did not like very much. One was that Samuel intends to take Percy out to Minnesota with him. I had been hoping that he would leave him at Elyria; while himself went on to Minnesota alone. My greater grievance is that you yourself think you will not come out with him. It will be a great disappointment to us. You know we never really had a home of our own before; and we feel quite important about it.I do not believe I ever wanted, when a boy, to go home & see my Mother; to come and see me.
