User-Contributed Transcription I.S.M. Grouts Isaac Dec. 10, 1848 Grouts Dec. 10th, 1848.Dear Mother Your excellent letter was duly & gratefully received yesterday. Being stuck here at Grouts not very well, a rainy Sunday etc. I have been writing to Anne, from whom I received a nice letter yesterday and to Lucy who I suppose likely by this time is at Milo to spend the winter mostly. To prevent me from doing or feeling worse I believe I will continue the business by beginning at least a letter to you. As for you apprehensions of evil in my behalf, I guess there is little reason. The "Glory" of being at Grouts I should hardly think could injure any one. As for health, it is very possible that since being here, I may have somewhat overworked body or rather Mind, and am just now feeling the natural reaction. At any rate I feel rather dull stupid & sleepy for a day or two. I expect I have got the Jaundice a bit. Notice that I look about as yaller as a yellow dog today, and about as dull as a beetle.this Jaundice is a disease indigeneous to this Miserable Miller's River. At any rate prevalent here. something perhaps in the soil, air, or water. I do not like the place. Ann certainly seems to be very comfortable & happy in her new & far off situation. I judge from her letter that as a Teacher She has a better situation than she ever has had before. Says her school is more pleasant & less
