Now would it not be a good plan for you to mention that matter to Charles find what he feels about it; whether he thinks he owes me any thing, and intends to pay it; and if he does, just get him to send me his note for the sum with interest from some date, back, forward, or present. There appears to be a rather long story, fast; Excuse it, for I may not think of it again, any more than I did when you were here or when I have been at Milo.What shall I do if I am thrown out of business here, this Fall or Winter and cannot find any other situation? That is the greatest trouble in Engineering; it is not a permanent business and the getting a situation is perhaps the worst thing about it. Perhaps I was unfortunate in beginning on a road partly finished. The Vt. & Mass. R.R. is now near completion some say it will be finished by Dec 1st at any rate: some say Jan1st, some indeed, next spring. But then that cannot heed so much help at the end you know have been lately turning off some, more will be without doubt before the road is complete. To be sure, they tell me I shall probably be wanted as long as any one; and perhaps I may; as I believe I have made myself pretty useful for my standing & salary: Still I cannot expect always to be favored, even at the expense of those who have friends to book out for them. The Question is, what had I better do? My object of course is to get ahead as fast as possible. Can I do better than to go South, if I can get an opportunity? There I could expect better wages and more rapid advancement; and perhaps full as good opportunity to
