User-Contributed Transcription I.S. MetcalfApril 15, '47 Orono, April 25, 1847Dear Mother, I received your last letter a few days since, and was as usual much gratified thereby. Nothing hardly seems to do one quite so much good as the reception of letters, especially from home; or, indeed those filled with good news, from dear friends any where. I do not believe that one hundred dollars of money, much as I need it, would have made me feel so well, for the present at least, as the letters or rather the news I received in the letters from College last week. You will say, 'Why, what was it?' and then if you were told, perhaps, why, what is that to you? So I do not know as it is much use to tell you. It was simply the alignment of parts, that is of the College honors, in the next clap. Which came out exactly as I thought right in favor of my Secret society, and especially of my particular friend Case, of Levant. So the College knows in the next Class, Junior Class, stand thus among the four Secret Societies and etc.[approximations of Greek letters] DKE, 4. YV. 3. ADP.2. XY 1.��!!! I know it ought to be so, but there has been so many influences at work, so much cunning, that we are often tempted to lose our faith in such things in the Old
